Porfiriato

For 31 years, at the turn of the XIX century, Porfirio Diaz ruled the country and used his power and influence to turn Mexico City into a more parisian city creating new public buildings, monuments plus neighborhoods for the new European industrial families; and today you can travel in time back to Porfirio Diaz times.

This walking tour would take you through the streets of La Roma Norte and La Juarez, the neighborhoods where the elite used to built their mansions; and the historic center where many public buildings got built to make the city more elegant. The area is characterized by art nouveau and art deco palaces/mansions, the Paseo de la Reforma with its monuments and the Alameda Central with its museums and commercial buildings around it. A couple of years after the fall of the Mexican monarchy the general Porfirio Díaz seized power by organizing a coup in 1876 and for the next decades he will govern the country under an “order and progress” policy inviting foreign investment in the country: British miners, German chemists, French architects and retailers who migrated to the country and started business, kicking off the Mexican gilded age. The tour suggest visiting the place where Porfirio used to live, el Castillo de Chapultepec in the morning; a tour around La Roma Norte visiting a historical house, hotel and a monument during the afternoon; and to end the day dinner plus a palatial walking tour around the Centro Histórico.
