During the Porfiriato and “Mexican Miracle” (from the 40s till the 70s) millions of farmers and europeans migrated to the capital looking for opportunities transforming Mexico City into a chaotic colorful metropolis that absorbed the ancient lake and the towns around it; but not everything it’s lost and you can go back in time to the Frida Kahlo days.
This tour would take you through the south of the city where you can find the remants of the lake of Xochimilco with its chanels and chinampas plus Coyoacán, the neighborhood where Frida Kahlo spent her childhood. The area is characterized by colorful streets, hidden parks, and electrical wires going in all directions. This is the most representative part of Mexico that reflects the reality of most Mexicans who live a more simple, suburban but charming life. In the past Coyoacán and Xochimilco were some of the many Chichimec towns around the lakes of the Anahuac that during the colonial times became villas with ranches around them but in the XX century became the neighborhoods of the middle and lower class. The tour suggest spending the morning in Xochimilco; then visit the Frida Kahlo house and her neighborhood, Coyoacán, in the afternoon; and to end the day shopping handcrafts in a traditional market plus a cultural center. This is the rural side of the metropolis that makes you for get about the city and feel like you are in a little town.
