MADRID
Austrias
This tour would take you through the streets of the neighborhoods of Opera, the oldest one in the city where you can find many medieval buildings still standing today; and Sol the neighborhood where the Habsburg built public squares and monasteries. The area is characterized by small steep streets, stone buildings and mansard roofs. Due to a series of unfortunate events Carlos V became the most powerful man of the world creating an empire that included medieval Amsterdam, Milan, Barcelona, Toledo, Viena Florence, Budapest and today Germany Switzerland; he never stablished a capital and would travel from one kingdom to the other but when he died he split all the territories into 2 groups for his 2 sons. The wholly Roman Empire went to Ferdinand and Aragon, Castilla, Portugal, Sicily, Naples, the Duchy of Milan and the provinces of the Netherlands went to Philip II. He finished conquering the Mexica, the Incas and the Philippines, starting what we now know as the Spanish Empire and its golden age of international trade, and he made Madrid the capital of his vast empire. The tour suggest visiting 2 museums in medieval buildings during the morning; 2 historical churches plus tapas in Plaza Mayor during the afternoon; and a historic walking tour plus a flamenco show at night.
